Calculating the Social Impact of Home Automation for People With Disability

Home automation significantly benefits people with disabilities by enhancing independence and reducing reliance on carers. This study found that the social return on investment (SROI) for home automation ranges from $38.80 to $15.10 for every $1 invested over a 10-year period, with savings on care attendant hours being the largest contributor. Even in the highest cost scenario, the investment in home automation was repaid in social value within the first year. These findings highlight home automation as a sound investment that improves the quality of life for people with disabilities and offers compelling financial savings, justifying continued funding for this assistive technology.
