Essential Frequently Asked Information
A specialised medical massage, sometimes called clinical or therapeutic massage, is delivered by trained professionals with the goal of addressing specific health concerns, such as pain relief, injury recovery, or improving mobility. It involves assessment, targeted techniques (like myofascial release or trigger point therapy), and is often part of a wider treatment plan prescribed by healthcare providers. In contrast, spa massages focus on relaxation, stress relief, and general wellness, using gentler techniques and without a clinical assessment or specific medical goals. Medical massage is outcome-driven and often integrated into allied health care, while spa massage is primarily about comfort and relaxation.
Massage therapy is a hands-on approach where the therapist uses pressure, kneading, and manipulation to release muscle tension, promote circulation, and address soft tissue restrictions. It is typically passive for the client. Stretch therapy, on the other hand, involves actively or passively lengthening muscles and connective tissues, often with the client’s participation. Stretch therapy aims to improve flexibility, joint mobility, and muscle balance, and may include techniques like proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). While massage focuses on tissue manipulation, stretch therapy targets muscle elongation and movement patterns—both can be used together for optimal recovery and performance.
Massage and stretch therapies are valuable adjuncts in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) setting. Medical massage can reduce pain, ease muscle spasms, and promote tissue healing, supporting physiotherapy and occupational therapy goals. Stretch therapy enhances flexibility, prepares muscles for movement, and helps prevent injury. Together, they can accelerate rehabilitation, improve functional outcomes, and support overall wellbeing. Collaboration with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other allied health professionals ensures that these therapies are safely and effectively integrated into comprehensive care plans tailored to each individual’s needs.
Massage or stretch therapy may be prescribed when a client presents with musculoskeletal pain, restricted mobility, muscle tightness, sports injuries, or as part of post-surgical rehabilitation. They are also used to manage chronic conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, or neurological disorders with spasticity. Stretch therapy is often recommended for those with limited flexibility or recurrent muscle strains, while medical massage is indicated for targeted pain relief, injury recovery, or to complement other therapies. The decision is based on a thorough assessment by the allied health team and is tailored to specific therapeutic goals.

Yes, there are important contraindications. Massage should generally be avoided in cases of acute infections, fever, recent surgery, deep vein thrombosis, certain cancers, open wounds, or unstable fractures. Stretch therapy is not suitable for acute muscle or ligament injuries, nerve injuries, or when there is sharp, radiating pain. Both therapies require caution in people with osteoporosis, severe cardiovascular conditions, or neurological diseases with spasticity. Always consult your doctor for their opinion or guideline and then discuss with us.
